Sophie Mac - Christopher
It’s undeniable that female vocalists are currently dominating the British music scene.
Whether it’s the retro poppiness of Eliza Doolittle and Marina and the Diamonds, the electro-lite tunes of Ellie Goulding, the carefully engineered image of Florence Welch, or the teen-appeal of Pixie Lott and Katy Perry, girls are hot hot hot right now, and that’s before getting on to the spate of Lady Gaga wannabes arriving from the other side of the Atlantic.
Then along comes Sophie Mac, armed with a tiny voice, acoustic guitar and unashamed British accent. Her confessional lyrics are – to namedrop again – more in the vein of Kate Nash than the current crop of chanteuses; take the refrain from debut single ‘Christopher’, “Your girlfriend/she’s so beautiful and nice/you go hand in hand through Soho drinking coffee/reading Vice”.
It’s a simple, fragile little tune most of us can identify with, where Mac confesses to a crush that “fell on headphone ears”. Other tracks from her forthcoming EP, which will be released later this year, are similarly low key, with a self-deprecating, schoolgirl sweetness. After all, do we really need another preened and polished superstar?
