DJ Hell - U Can Dance
Legendary former frontman of Roxy Music Bryan Ferry lends his seductive vocals to DJ Hell’s new single ‘U Can Dance’, due to be released in January.
The third single to be taken from album Teufelswerk (Devil’s Work) it has already proved a hit in clubs, as he recently proved during a momentous performance at Fabric last month. Its dark techno rhythm combined with Ferry’s irresistibly sultry vocals are enough to entice the listener to abandon all inhibitions, get up on a table and dance.
Teufelswerk has brought the German techno DJ much controversy this year thanks to second single The DJ. The track features a P Diddy sample where he waxes lyrical about “DJ's that ain't afraid to play those twenty minute versions”; a sample that Felix da Housecat claimed was his and had been used without his permission.
The promo video courted provocation by featuring girls and boys in their underwear re-enacting sex scenes with their faces covered by animal masks and clown make up. It is in fact very clever product placement for Hell – he recently helped design an underwear line for Austrian label Wendy & Jim, which the models wear throughout the video.
The video for U Can Dance is a more subtle affair, evoking the glamorous girls that used to grace the covers of Roxy Music albums; indeed Hell - being 47 himself - grew up listening to the vocal stylings of Ferry and David Bowie. Having had his first experience DJing as a teenager, his career spans over 30 years during which he’s been credited with initiating the 80’s electro revival as well as setting up label International DeeJay Gigolo Records.
In Ferry, Hell finds another unlikely yet formidable pairing. U Can Dance may just be an electro-glam marriage made in heaven.
