Holding Out For a Hero
Heroes Cast, BBC Pictures
Described as the new Lost the first series of Heroes was a huge hit in America and has just been nominated for eight Emmy Awards. In the UK 600,000 people tuned in to see what all the fuss was about when it debuted on the Sci-Fi channel earlier this year. And for those who don’t have Sky or Virgin, you no longer have to miss out. The BBC is bringing the Heroes phenomena to terrestrials.
The show is about ordinary people around the world discovering that they possess super powers.
The first few episodes look at how they deal with gaining those powers – such as seeing the future and travelling through time - and being different from everyone around them.
As the series progresses this mismatched group begin to realise their destiny.
But, every good guy needs a villain and our Heroes soon discover that there are folk hell bent on preventing them from fulfilling their fate, and harnessing their powers for personal gain.
Here’s a rundown to the new TV Heroes who look set to capture the nation.
But be warned: they are seriously addictive and you could lose the power to leave your sofa on a Wednesday night…..
Mohinder Suresh : a professor of genetics at the University of Madras in India. While he doesn’t have any super power, he is continuing his father’s work into human evolution and the development of superhuman abilities. When his father is murdered in New York it becomes clear that his research was close to the bone.
Claire Bennet : a Texan high school cheerleader who discovers that when hurt her body heals itself immediately. Being adopted, her new found abilities make her keen to discover just who her biological parents were.
Peter Petrelli : former hospice nurse who has dedicated his life to caring for others so it is not surprising to learn that he is an empath. But just what powers do empaths have?
Nathan Petrelli : Peter’s older brother and a congressman. He has known about his ability for a while but has fought to keep it secret from others, even his nearest and dearest.
Hiro Nakamura : a computer programmer from Tokyo who learns he can travel through space and time. During one of his early travels he discovers that a cataclysmic event is set to occur in the future and sets about trying to prevent it.
Issac Mendez : an artist living in New York who paints the future. He also writes a comic called 9th Wonders that features future events and has Hiro Nakamura as one of its main characters.
Matt Parkman: Los Angeles police officer who can hear the thoughts of others. At first he finds this very difficult - Matt has no control over his power and hears a cacophony of thoughts and musings in a head-filling rush of voices.
Niki Sanders : a former internet stripper whose power is a bit like the Incredible Hulk’s (although she doesn’t turn green and have bad hair.)
When trouble is around, her alter ego with fantastic strength helps out. Husband DL and son Micah also possess special powers.
Heroes starts Wednesday 25th July at 9pm on BBC2
