Kings of Nylon?
January 18th, 2010
Do you remember when Kings of Leon used to sport bushy beards, flicked hair and flares, then in time for their most commercial album to date they seemed to have been the objects of a style overhaul. Hair was shawn to reveal chiseled jaws and sparkling eyes, the hippy togs traded in for skinny jeans, the ubiquitous checked shirt and waistcoats. The next thing you know Caleb and the other members of the Followill clan were knighted as sex symbols, aided by their radio hogging ‘Sex on fire.’ Of course with any success story there comes a backlash and it was only a mattter of time before the Nashville rockers fell prey, not helped by the scuffle at the Brit awards, weird reaction to the Reading Festival crowd and early fans opinions that they may have forgotton their early musical roots.
The cynical/perceptive out there may have deduced that the transformation way have been a wise marketing tool instilled by their record label to sell the band to the masses. In other words, it wasn’t a natural style progression, the hiring of a stylist or adviser is highly likely—- allegedly !!
So, when news hit that the boys had teamed up with Surface to Air I wasn’t overly enthused. Whilst the guys always look cool, they are hardly innovative and if their cool aesthetic is the result of others eye for style then what could they offer to the collaboration? There’s been a plethora of hits and missed when it comes to music/fashion collaborations, many of which I have discussed in this here blog, so how would the boys fare……
Surface to Air is a creative company, worn by many of our most stylist musical stars and known for its ongoing projects with contemporary art, music, fashion and photography.
Apparently in the last year the company and KOL have become firm friends and have creative ideas that meld well together, thus making the decision to put together a collection together a natural decision.KOL Follow in the footsteps of successful collaborations with Justice and Sølve Sundsbø and as expected have delivered a capsule featuring checked shirts, leather jackets and jeans. Whilst overhaul the collection isn;t particularly inspirational , Surface to Air neverr falter in delivering a high quality of production and most importantly fit, so I can almost guarantee the garments will look pretty good once adorned.
Rumour has it there is already an extensive waiting list, something which I’m sure STA will have predicted with some confidence.
capsule collection “S2A x KOL”.
