LFW - Burberry Prorsum
September 28th, 2009
What the young Christopher Bailey has done to the brand is beyond miraculous. His savvy marketing and styling has thankfully transported Burberry from Chav to Chic and Cool since his arrival in 2001.
Fashion journos and fans alike were united in their excitement when news of Burberrys return to London Fashion Week for the 25th anniversary was released, we just hoped Mr Bailey would be able to continue his run of success for the show at Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground at the Chelsea College of Art.
The front row can be a gage of how ‘in’ or relevant a designer is , and if this one was anything to go by this was the most eagerly anticipated show of the week. With the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, Emma Watson, Liv Tyler, Mary-Kate Olsen, Dev Patel, Freida Pinto and Agyness Deyn hogging the front row you’d be forgiven for thinking we spent little time actually looking at the catwalk…… but no with this flawless collection we couldn’t have cared less about the celeb sightings… well almost!
Quite rightly he began the show with a version of a beige trench, something which the brand is synonymous with, and a staple every girl should be lucky enough to own. It was belted over a nude chiffon mini dress which folds and weaves creating beautiful frothy drapes - a dress I’m pretty sure Alexa wore in Silver to the Summer exhibition. This came in various hues including mint, lemon, lilac and pink, looking extremely ethereal set against the pale skin of some of the models.
There followed some coat/dress hybrids which confused and delighted, with hemlines that fell to mid-thigh-perfect red carpet dresses for the young and lithe.
To remove some saccharine from the romantic show bulky wooden platforms encased the ankles via thick leather laces , sometimes teamed with socks.
The shoulder trend was adhered to with an ice blue dress (and a similar lilac one) which was teamed with a brown leather belt with an aged gold buckle.
There were also ribbed furs which added a bit of fun and russian princess indulgence to the looks.
P.S If Im not mistaken one of the menswear looks were modeled by none other that ‘One night Onlys’ young frontman .
